  • “After only one SQ4R training session with Mr. Goss, my grades immediately started to improve. My 70's went to 90's and my confidence in my classes soared. I was on the high honor roll throughout high school and SQ4R definitely changed my life. SQ4R is the reason I received a full academic scholarship to Johnson and Wales College where I am studying cybersecurity and plan to work for Homeland Security.”
    - James Pellerin, Johnson and Wales College
  • “SQ4R really helps me with studying because when I review my notes after I am done reading an assignment I know exactly what I have read and what is the important information in the assignment. It also helps me organize and store important information in my memory so I can recall it during tests. As a result, I am getting higher test scores and better grades in my courses. Now that I know how to use SQ4R I have more confidence in school and less stress. I really feel like I can do well in any course that uses a textbook.”
    - Danielle Castonguay, Quinsigamond Community College
  • “I graduated from an intensive EMT training program after high school and used Mr. Goss’ SQ4R study skills during the training. SQ4R enabled me to comprehend a very rigorous program of scientific information and achieve high test scores and good grades throughout the program. SQ4R study skills really helped prepare me for a job I love, working on ambulances in the city of Worcester.”
    - Tom Marshall, MedStar Ambulance Services
  • “SQ4R has definitely helped me learn and remember a lot of new information associated with my new job. It helped me separate what is important from what is not important in the volumes of technical information I have to learn. SQ4R has certainly made a difference in my learning experience and has given me more confidence in studying. Being in the job world now, I have definitely implemented SQ4R in my own life and would recommend it to others who are trying to be successful.”
    - Micah Cellucci, Sales Representative Solar city
  • “Entering high school, I had no idea how to take effective notes. Before learning about SQ4R, my grades were very low because I did not have good study skills. After learning about SQ4R, my grades improved tremendously. Not only could I take notes in a simple fashion, I could actually understand them. My test scores went from failing to all As. SQ4R is the reason I have been on high honor throughout high school. I highly recommend that every student learns about and uses these study skills.”
    - Gabriella Galluzzo, Senior Douglas High School
  • “Using the SQ4R studying technique taught to me by Mr. Goss has increased my exam scores by 15-20% compared to the past.”
    - Jake Carter, Senior Douglas High School
  • “I was a student in your Biology class in North Attleboro High School last year. I'm now a sophomore and I'm taking AP Biology. I just really wanted to thank you for teaching SQ4R because I feel that this is really an invaluable skill to have for high school. Honestly, last year I didn't really see the value of SQ4R and sort of brushed it off because I didn't really need it in Biology Level 1. However, in AP Bio we are given lengthy chapters that throw all sorts of info at us and SQ4R really does help in sorting out and organizing all of my information in one neat study guide. Honestly, without SQ4R I don't know how I'd be able to do well in this class. The amount of information is nothing I've ever seen in any class, but I digress. I've been maintaining an A grade in that class whereas some of my peers are falling behind. SQ4R is a quick, efficient, and easy way to take notes and study and I thank you for teaching us how to do it. Please know that what you're teaching helps a lot of people.”
    - Jeffrey F. North Attleboro High School
  • “I have been inspired by the entertaining personality and great teaching skills of Mr. Goss. He is the best teacher I have ever had in high school and I say this for a reason. He taught me how to effectively study and take notes from textbooks using his method of SQ4R. He presented this amazing method during the first week of school and it really intrigued me. After practicing SQ4R in Biology, I decided to use it for all of my courses to see if it would help me. To my surprise this amazing method of note-taking has really helped me better understand the material in my other textbooks. I used to be a horrible note taker and would spend hours summarizing important information from my textbooks but that has changed. Now I spend less time studying and learn more by creating perfect notes which enable me to get higher scores on important tests. As a result, my grades this year have truly exceeded their normal range and I firmly believe its from the note-taking and study techniques I learned from Mr. Goss. I definitely plan to continue using SQ4R in all my courses and would highly recommend it to every student, especially the ones that are struggling to achieve their academic goals.”
    - Eric Harris, Junior Douglas High School
  • “I used to take a lot of notes and did not know if they were important or not but since Mr. Goss taught me SQ4R my notes are much shorter and I know for a fact that they pertain to the subject. As a result I have a lot more confidence studying for a test and understand the subject matter more effectively. My test grades have definitely improved and I feel more confident taking tests now. The end result is I am taking less notes, studying less time, but gaining more knowledge. I highly recommend this studying technique for anyone in high school or college. It will really help you separate the wheat from the chaff.”
    - Sarabeth Martin, Vet Tech Student at NE Tech
  • “Throughout my sophomore and senior years at Douglas High School, I have used Mr. Goss' SQ4R study skills techniques to help me stay organized while taking notes. My improved note-taking skills have helped me score higher grades on challenging tests and quizzes. Overall, I believe that these skills have made my educational experience much better.”
    - Antonia Kosnoski, Senior Douglas High School
  • “I was in Mr. Goss's class my junior year of high school. When he was teaching my class about SQ4R I blew it off like it was just another thing that I had to do. I am now a senior in high school and thank goodness Mr. Goss taught us about SQ4R. I am taking AP American Government and we have to take notes on 20 pages every night and actually understand them the next day. There is barely any time for review. I also work three jobs. How am I suppose to work, do homework, and still have a social life? Well, if it wasn't for SQ4R, I wouldn't be getting a 95 in that class. Because of SQ4R I have been able to cut my homework from 4 hours a night to 2 hours a night. I know 2 hours a night does not sound like much but for me 2 hours is so much better than staying up until midnight just trying to finish my homework. Mr. Goss's class was very helpful, even though he was a Biotechnology Instructor he helped my whole class of 16 students tremendously with our senior classes. I could not thank Mr. Goss enough for teaching us about SQ4R.”
    - Kamryn Reardon, Senior Douglas High School
  • “I truly believe that SQ4R is a very effective way of taking notes. I use it in every one of my classes and it really helps me pull out the important information in the text. By turning the headings and titles of chapters into questions it gives me something specific to answer and directs me towards the important information. SQ4R has guided me through high school since I first learned it in Mr. Goss' 9th grade Biology course.”
    - Stephanie Lombardi, Senior Douglas High School
  • “SQ4R has helped me with all my classes especially Economics where there is so much factual information to read and learn. It helps me better understand the information and make connections throughout the text. It also helps me to separate what's important in the reading from what's not important. The note-taking techniques have helped me better prepare for tests and help me retain and remember important information longer. I highly recommend these study skills to anybody taking text-based courses that want to get good grades, especially if they are struggling in school.”
    - Grace Burns, Senior Douglas High School
  • “When using SQ4R study techniques, I remember more of what I write down when taking notes and understand more thoroughly what I am reading. This obviously leads to achieving higher test scores and better grades. SQ4R is a very effective note taking and studying technique.”
    - Cameron Saster, Senior Douglas High School
  • “I have been using SQ4R in my classes this semester and it helps me study for exams by enabling me to pick out what is important in the text to study. I would recommend it to other students because it helps with text books that have lots of information. SQ4R helps to narrow down the information so you can focus on what's most important. It's a great study helper!”
    - Gabriela Horosz, Freshman Rhode Island College
  • “Mr. Goss. I want to thank you so much for showing us the SQ4R note taking techniques. It has helped me take notes efficiently this year at Worcester State.”
    - Edward Peladeau, Freshman Worcester State University
  • “I learned SQ4R study skills from Mr. Goss during my junior year of high school and I still make good use of them to this day. College can be very challenging if you do not have the proper study skills. Coming into it, I was really focused on my social life, and I thought "Why use the textbook to study when I could just use my notes from class?" Shortly after my first test, I realized that the textbook is really important, as long as you can decipher what is important from what is fluff added into the material. SQ4R is extremely helpful with aiding in deciphering between all of this information. It is because of this incredible study method taught to me by Mr. Goss a few years back that I have been able to understand my textbook and feel comfortable in my study habits while still maintaining a healthy and fun social life. SQ4R really works, and is a tool that will last you a lifetime.”
    - Laura Loranger, Freshman, Framingham State University
  • “Before I walked into Mr. Goss' classroom my sophomore year I had never heard of SQ4R. He taught the topic to my class on one of the first days of school and encouraged us to use it throughout the year. Even though I am now a senior and do not have Mr. Goss as a teacher anymore, I use SQ4R study skills on a regular basis in all my classes. Mr. Goss made learning the skill easy and fun and I will never forget it. There is no doubt that I will carry the lesson of SQ4R with me to college and use it every time I need to take notes and study for a test. I am so thankful that a teacher in my school system, and the only teacher that has ever introduced the topic to me, would take the time to teach his students not only a study skill but a life-long learning skill.”
    - Claudia Slawski, Senior Douglas High School
  • “SQ4R is one of the most useful study skills I have ever learned. Throughout history, it has been proven one of the most effective forms of studying. SQ4R helps me to find important information in a textbook and insures that the information I take notes on is the most important information in the assignment. SQ4R also helps me better prepare for a quiz, test, or even just some class assignments. Without SQ4R my grades and test preparation would be so much worse than it is now!!”
    - Nick Daly, 4th Class Cadet Mass Maritime Academy
  • “I've never really had a problem with taking notes or looking over them. However, that doesn't mean that SQ4R hasn't helped me since Mr. Goss explained it. Through this process, I've noticed the information being more organized and concise. Both qualities help retaining and studying information easier. Being able to find topics due to titles and indentations help for more efficient time use and being able to see the vital information without extra fluff helps me remember the subject. Time, also being important, is saved when writing down only what's necessary. My opinion is that you should continue to encourage your students towards this strategy.”
    - Chris Cicero, Senior Douglas High School
  • “Studying and note-taking skills are essential throughout high school. Finding an efficient way to write down and take in information can be very difficult. In 9th grade, I struggled on many exams because I didn't have a good method for taking notes. Fortunately in 10th grade Biology class, I learned SQ4R. Note taking is a tough skill to learn, and if you're struggling just like I was, I highly suggest this method. Since I've learned how to efficiently study and take notes using SQ4R, my test scores and overall grades have improved significantly.”
    - Nick Balasco, Senior Douglas High School
  • “SQ4R helps with History because there is so much information you only read and take notes on what you need to know. It also helps me to better understand the information. SQ4R has definitely helped me get higher test scores and better grades. I plan to use it in the future especially in the HVAC industry where I will have to do a lot of studying and reading.”
    - Tyler Couture, Senior Douglas High School
  • “Before I took Mr. Goss's class I took very disorganized notes. They would be all over the paper without any organization to them. Mr. Goss showed us SQ4R and it was like night and day. The steps keep you focused on the topic and have a certain flow to them. Writing it in a question form instead of normal note style makes you think more and have more in depth notes. SQ4R is a very resourceful studying technique. It has really helped me in my other classes and I will continue to use it when I enter college.”
    - Mark Blatchford, Senior Douglas High School
  • “SQ4R has improved my study skills by helping me to identify the most important information in a section. Now that I use SQ4R I can understand the information in the textbook. SQ4R really benefits students in every subject that uses textbooks.”
    - Angela Woodford, Junior Douglas High School
  • “SQ4R has helped me find all the needed information in a textbook that is needed to solve the bolded question. I feel that it has helped drastically in my grades as well because it makes you get to see the trees through the forest. SQ4R has helped me improve my study skills in all of my classes.”
    - Megan Miller, Junior Douglas High School
  • “SQ4R is the best! First week I started college I had to read and study 40+ pages. SQ4R helped me take perfect notes.”
    - Nathan Cornejo, Freshman Nichols College
  • “When I say I am an unorganized person, I do not mean I have a messy car or a scattered locker, I mean my study skills are everywhere and I can never figure out how to get the information I need in order of importance. That was before I learned SQ4R! When Mr. Goss introduced me to SQ4R I knew it was going to help change the way I performed in school academically. This is the most effective way to study and I would never do anything different!”
    - Clarissa Morin, Senior Douglas High School
  • “I just started my Vet-Tech courses this fall and with all this information I have to learn and the seven textbooks I have, I am really appreciating that SQ4R technique. It has really been helping me filter the information that I really need for my tests and quizzes. Thank you so much for sharing that technique with us. It is really really really helpful.”
    - Sarabeth Martin, Vet Tech Student at NE Tech
  • “If seeking academic success, I highly recommend practicing SQ4R study skills. SQ4R, throughout history has been a proven system for aiding in increasing one's knowledge on any given subject. Thanks to Mr. Goss implementing this effective way of studying, I have realized that my notes have become noticeably more helpful. This acquired skill will definitely assist me in future academic endeavors. Again, I would like to thank Mr. Goss for teaching me such a necessary tool to achieve academic success.”
