USE HOMEWORK WISELY TO PRACTICE STUDY SKILLS


Homework is a sensitive and controversial topic because you are imposing on the personal time of very busy and talented students. Many work after school, play sports, participate in clubs and interesting hobbies. Often times they get home late and by the time they have dinner it’s almost time to go to bed. Assigning homework nightly, on weekends, holidays and vacations creates a lot of stress and can make students dislike school. When you consider most of what they learn in your course will be learned in the classroom with you all that homework is not necessary. Instead of assigning homework over the weekend say, “okay your homework is to rest, relax, have fun and come back Monday ready to work!”. Model SQ3R-based proven teaching and learning techniques, such as 21st Century Study Skills, while teaching your subject and assign a couple brief written homework assignments during the week to reinforce the subject material and practice the study skills you modeled in class.
